Natural Sleep Remedies

21 Aug

Natural sleep remedies are increasingly popular among insomnia sufferers as they are generally non-addictive and safer compared to prescribed sleeping pills. In this article I will mention a few natural sleep remedies that are widely available on the market and explain some of their benefits and usage.

Please note that although natural sleep remedies are perceived as being safer than sleeping pills, they should still be taken with caution and should not be taken unnecessarily. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before considering taking any natural sleep remedies.

Natural sleep remedies may contain natural ingredients that may interfere with prescription medication or may not be suitable for you. Seeking medical advice is a must before considering taking any sleep aids or remedies.

Prescribed Sleeping pills on the other hand are generally bad news. Sleeping pills will break down your body’s natural sleep cycle and make sleep very difficult in the long term. It may also affect the amount of deep sleep you attain during the night as the chemicals in most major sleeping pills interfere with normal brain wave patterns.

You may find that you wake up feeling groggy, drowsy or tired. Other Side effects include urinary retention, blurred vision, dizziness and palpitations. Sleeping pills may help you get to sleep but with continual use your body will build tolerance, and you may find that you need to increase your dose to attain the same affect. Although you may be tempted to up your dosage, this is not advised as it may have detrimental affects on your health. Please consult with your doctor if you need advice on this.

Here are some natural sleep remedies to consider: Standardized Valerian extract is a safe and non addictive sedative which works by calming the mind and body. It has been used for centuries and is widely used. Valerian is available at most pharmacies and is a natural remedy to aid sleep. Taken before bedtime it can ease nerves and calm the mind to help you drift off to sleep. Lemon balm and Hops, are also soothing remedies which can help calm and relax the mind and body.

If you are suffering from mild depression, this could be the cause of your insomnia. St John’s wort is fast becoming a popular herbal remedy, widely available it is used to treat mild to moderate depression. It is even prescribed by doctors in several European countries to treat depression. As with all medicines it’s recommended that you consult your doctor for advice. It may be a natural remedy, but it may not be right for you.

To cope with fatigue and to boost your immune system, try Ginseng. Ginkgo Biloba is also widely available and can help improve memory, concentration and increase oxygen flow to the brain.

Although side effects are rare when taking Natural sleep remedies, you should stop taking them immediately and seek medical advice if you experience anything unusual. To be honest it is best not to take anything at all. Instead pay attention to your sleep habits (also referred to as sleep hygiene). Your daily routine, habits, diet and emotional levels all play a part in how well you are able to sleep.

It’s far more effective to tackle the cause of insomnia rather than the symptoms alone. Here are some simple steps you can take to improve your sleep:

Get up and sleep at the same time everyday.
Wind down an hour or so before you sleep.
Relax with some soothing music or chamomile tea.
Leave your work at work!
Expose yourself to sunlight in the day.
Ensure that your bed is comfortable and supportive.
Ensure your bedroom is quiet, dark and not to warm.
Talk about your problems and don’t let your emotions build up.
Remind yourself that bedtime is for sleep and not a time to worry.

I hope you find these simple tips useful.

Taking natural sleep remedies may aid sleep, however you may also want to consider alternative therapies and practices such as acupuncture, hypnosis and reflexology.

Exercise with Flu or a Cold, or Stay in Bed?

20 Aug

Most doctors allow their patients to exercise when they have a cold, as long as they don’t have a fever and their muscles don’t hurt when they exercise. However, it’s probably better to stop exercising altogether when you have an infection. You risk injury if you exercise when your muscles hurt at rest or when you start to exercise. When muscles are damaged, they release enzymes from their cells into the bloodstream and they fill with blood from broken blood vessels. One study reported markedly increased muscle damage during relatively minor exercise during an infection, with blood tests demonstrating increases in muscle enzymes and ultrasound tests demonstrating hemorrhage into the muscles.

You also should not exercise when you have a high fever. When you exercise, your heart has to pump blood to your muscles to supply them with oxygen. It also has to pump blood from your muscles to your skin where the heat is dissipated. When you have a fever, your heart has to work extra hard to get rid of extra heat. Furthermore, some viruses that infect your nose and throat can also infect your heart muscle. The combination of the extra work and an infected heart muscle could cause irregular heart beats. You won’t lose much conditioning unless you take off for more than a week.

Do you think you will get better faster by staying in bed for a day or two or by going about your normal daily activities? A huge review of the medical literature from 1966 to 1999, published in the British medical journal Lancet, shows that there is no evidence that bed rest helps you to heal faster from any medical condition. They found only 39 studies testing whether bed rest benefitted any medical condition. Twenty-four studies showed that bed rest was of little or no benefit in preventing side effects of medical procedures such as spinal anaesthesia, spinal fluid withdrawal, and multiple x ray procedures. Fifteen studies showed no benefit in treating medical conditions such as low back pain, spontaneous labor, high blood pressure during pregnancy, uncomplicated heart attacks, rheumatoid arthritis or infectious hepatitis.

During World War II, American soldiers were drafted and sent to do their basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center before they were sent to fight in Europe. A major epidemic of flu occurred affecting almost all the troops. Half of the soldiers were kept in bed, while the other half stayed in the vigorous exercise of basic training. Both groups required the same amount of time to recover, although those forced to undergo the rigorous demands of preparing for war complained more.

The next time you feel sick, stay in bed if you like, but it probably won’t help you heal faster.

Causes of Thick Toenails and Ways to Cure

19 Aug

Thick toenails can be less than aesthetically pleasing to the eye and can be quite painful at times. Fortunately remedies and prevention methods exist.

Think toenails are commonly associated with a toenail fungus. Often symptoms besides a thickening of the toenail may occur such as nail discoloration, fogging, chipping, or cracking. In rarer cases thick toenails may be caused by skin diseases. Nail injuries can also result in deformation of the nail and thickening. Toenail thickening can also be caused by wearing tight fitting shoes.

Filing the nail away can help to relieve any pain you may have in the nail or may make the nail look more aesthetically appeasing. Filing can also help in treating toenail fungus because it allows for more direct absorption so the treatment reaches inside the nail effectively eliminating any fungus.

The best treatment for toenail fungus is probably one that does not require prescription drugs. People often think of this as the easy way out but it is quite costly. These prescriptions can cause severe side effects and put toxins into the body which in some cases lead to liver failure.

Fortunately there are better ways to treat toenail fungus and thickness. I started treating my nails by simply filing them down after a warm shower. Be careful not to file your nails too low. Just take of a very thin layer of the nail. After filing, I bathed my feet in regular fermented beer for 30 minutes a treatment. I usually treated my nails like this twice day. After soaking my nails I then applied a natural topical treatment.

I began seeing improvements in the overall color and health of the nails within a few weeks. With a little bit of persistence and dedication to treating your nails you should start to see results.

Melanoma – Cancer of the Skin

18 Aug

Melanoma is a cancer of the skin that is malignant and can be found prominently on the skin but can also be found in the bowel and even the eye. Melanoma is the rarest of skin cancers but it causes the most skin cancer related deaths. Melanoma is caused by the uncontrolled growth of pigment cells known as melanocytes. The only cure for melanoma is to surgically remove the tumor before it grows to a size of 1mm. There are close to 160,000 new cases of melanoma worldwide each and every year and according to the World Health Organization there are approximately 48,000 deaths related to melanoma each year as well. 75 percent of all deaths from skin cancer are associated to malignant melanoma. Treatment for melanoma includes the aforementioned surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and even radiation therapy. It is recommended by doctors that anyone who has a family history of melanoma should see a dermatologist at least once a year to make sure they are not developing melanoma themselves.

The first case of melanoma did not come until the 1960s; at least the oldest known case was discovered until the 1960s. Scientists were working on a group of mummies when they noticed deformities in their skin. It was determined that these mummies did have some type of malignant melanoma. The mummies dated back at least 2,400 years. The first operation related to melanoma occurred in 1787 by a man named John Hunter. The tumor that was removed from the skin was preserved in the Hunterian Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The mass was not examined until the year of 1968. Upon examination and testing it was concluded that the mass was in fact a form of metastatic melanoma.

There is a mnemonic device to best remember the signs and symptoms of melanoma. It is “ABCDE.”

A: asymmetrical skin lesion
B: border of the lesion is irregular
C: color: melanomas usually have multiple colors
D: diameter: moles greater than 5mm are more likely to be melanomas than smaller ones
E: evolution: the evolution or change of a mole or lesion may be a hint that the lesion is becoming malignant. Elevation: the mole is raised or elevated above the skin.

There are seven types of melanoma. They are superficial spreading melanoma, nodular melanoma, acral lentiginous melanoma, lentigo maligna melanoma, clear cell sarcoma, mucosal melanoma and uveal melanoma. As with all types of cancers, especially malignant ones, there are four stages of the disease that melanoma can be active in. The stages are Stage I, Stage II, Stage III and Stage IV. Each different stage has sublevels that the melanoma can develop in.

Patients suffering from melanoma can feel a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, an uncomfortable feeling and a general weakness throughout the body. Melanoma, like all other cancers, cannot be completely cured but it can be kept under control with radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. As with all chemotherapy treatments a feeling of fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, bowel problems and weight loss can occur.

You can use detox foot patches to:

- Cleanse your system

- Stop your arthritis pain

- Relieve your stress & anxiety

- Boost your immune system

- Enhance your mental focus

The patches have positive effects all over your body. They can be attached to specific problem areas to relieve pain.

For knee problems patches are placed behind the knee. For eye problems place them on the back of your ears or on the temple (never put on your eyes).

For those interested in a deeper body cleanse detox patches can be placed on the back, on both sides of the spine and over the kidneys. This placement provides a deep cleanse that is easy to do.

Arthritis Patients Benefit From Exercise and Nutritional Supplements

15 Aug

People suffering from arthritis need to deal with chronic joint pain and loss of mobility as they cope with the disease. These symptoms tend to become worse as arthritis progresses, especially if the disease is not being treated properly. Medical experts strongly believe that exercise is very important in managing these two arthritis symptoms by reducing pain and increasing mobility.

In general, exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints that gives support and stability. Exercise eases pain provides warmth to the joints, and provides better circulation, improving the way nutrients are being transferred to the cells of the joints.

What kind of exercises can arthritis patients engage in to improve their mobility and lessen joint pain?

1. Range of motion exercises. These are a set of stretching exercises that help the patient extend his or her reach. These exercises prevent stiffness and maintain the arthritis patients mobility.

2. Strengthening exercises. Strengthening exercises help build muscle and make them stronger. Stronger muscles are needed to provide ample support to the joints.

3. Endurance exercises. Endurance exercises also build physical strength, enable the arthritis patient to be in a better frame of mind to deal with the joint pain, and eventually improve symptoms of the disease itself.

Examples of exercises that arthritis patients can do are regular walking or jogging on soft surfaces, swimming in warm water, doing tai chi or yoga, as well as stationary biking.

Exercise should also be done in moderation. A consistent lifestyle change incorporating exercise into a daily routine would be ideal. An arthritis patient should learn to listen to their body when doing exercise and not to push it when it becomes too painful. Too much exercise can only aggravate the symptoms of arthritis.

Exercise offers better mental health to arthritis patients by maintaining mobility and managing chronic joint pain. In addition, those with osteoarthritis can benefit taking nutritional supplements, particularly supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin. Recent studies have shown that glucosamine assists in building new cartilage tissue, while chondroitin helps in lubricating the joints. The newest formulas on the market have gone liquid and blend several synergistic ingredients together including the necessary glucosamine/chondroitin used in clinical studies.

Bizarre Sleep-Driving Draws Attention to Prescription Sleep Aids

14 Aug

You’ve probably heard of sleep walking, talking in your sleep, and even slightly more bizarre waking/sleep phenomena such as cleaning and other normal activities being carried out while one is technically, and for all intents and purposes, asleep.

What about sleep-driving though? That one tends to get everyone’s attention, and to stir alarm and fear in those that have a tendency to sleep walk, since this particular form of sleep walking can have deadly consequences. The sleep-driving phemonena is getting publicity lately though, and is also capturing the attention of the FDA, which is the government arm which regulates the food and drug industry.

You see, sleep-driving is rare, but it has been linked to prescription sleep aids in the instances reported, since the drivers were all on one sleep aid or another, and that is what has logically been blamed for the bizarre occurrences.

Sleep-driving is where a person who is not fully conscious actually gets their car keys, starts the car and subsequently drives around, perhaps aimlessly, or perhaps to a location they are accustomed to driving.

The person will then have absolutely no recollection of having driven their car while asleep. There have already been about 12 reports of sleep-driving, however it is thought this is not even the real count, since many of these incidents may go unreported since the subject doesn’t remember driving after the incident is over with.

Sleep-driving is not just related to one or two prescription insomnia drugs and prescription sleep aids, but actually all of them may potentially cause this type of semi-conscious activity.

Major makers of prescription sleep aids, such as the companies behind Ambien and Lunesta, have now been required to put warnings on their labels, warning consumers of the possibility for sleep driving as well as other activities that may be performed in the sleep while on their drug which may also threaten one’s safety, with driving obviously being the most imminent threat.

Although there have not been any deaths reported in connection with sleep driving, it is acknowledged that this may be something that has occurred, but has not been pinpointed as a sleep driving incident. How can sleep-driving and other complex sleep-related activities be avoided, or the risk at least be mitigated that these types of incidents will occur?

Well, authorities on the subject recommend that patients do not mix sedatives, whether over the counter or prescription, with any type of prescription sleep aid. They also recommend that patients stick to the dosage, and do not increase it on their own, and also that they remain cautious of mixing any other types of prescribed drugs or over the counter drugs with their prescription sleep aids.

There are also some excellent natural choices such as herbal and botanical formulas that will enhance your body’s natural ability to produce melatonin and other chemicals which relax the body and induce sleep, which do not have any known side effects such as those we just talked about.

Natural sleep aids allow you to get your rest and wake up refreshed, without having to worry about feeling heavily drugged or sedated, so it’s well worth a look if you’ve been thinking about getting help for insomnia or a rough period in your sleep cycles.

How to Slow Down Or Prevent Knee Arthritis

13 Aug

Arthritis unfortunately has become a way of life for many people not only in the United States but around the world. We know there are over a hundred different types of arthritis that affect humankind but, one that seems to prevail more then others is osteoarthritis.

Known also as OA it has become prevalent over the years due to our life spans increasing and the obesity factor that has its grips on western society. Our diet also has been help somewhat responsible for the rise in arthritis over the years and, it costs the healthcare systems millions of dollars to treat each year.

There is a multitude of information on arthritis today that can keep you well informed. Exercise is just one of the components listed in the prevention of osteoarthritis.

As we age there are numerous changes that takes place within our bodies. Most of them are preventable by taking the time to address them. One of those areas that is easily addressed is strength training to keep are bodies strong and to allow the muscles to do the job they were meant to do.

By having strong muscles in your legs for instance namely the quadriceps they will allow the knee joint to work smoothly and not bear the brunt of our bodyweight. As our thigh muscles weaken over the years due to lack of strength training the muscles can no longer do the job of supporting the knee joint so therefore the joint absorbs our bodyweight and the wear and tear now increases.

Of course if you are overweight as well, this only exacerbates the problem as the forces generated through the knee structure are more then it was designed to handle. Once the knee joint has to absorb a larger amount of force through it then, you begin to develop bone spurs and the quick decomposing of the cartilage which acts as a cushion between the femur and the tibia can no longer do what it was designed to do.

By keeping your thighs strong you allow the knees to work more efficiently and pain free.

Several exercises that I recommended that will get the results you seek are as follows.

1. Long arc quads: also known as seated leg extensions. Depending on your strength level you attach a weight to the end of your leg while seated in a straight back chair lift your foot until its straight and hold your foot up for a slow count of five. Completing this exercise for ten repetition is a good place to start. As you get stronger you increase the weight to work the muscle harder and to promote further strengthening.

2. Quadricep sets: Using this isometric exercise will increase your thigh strength but only in the plane or position that you are completing the exercise in. With isometric exercise the key here is to squeeze the muscle you intend to strengthen as hard as you can then count to five. You have to be sure not to hold your breath with isometrics as it will increase the pressure within your chest cavity and raise your blood pressure. You simply place your legs out flat and flex your thigh muscles. the back of your knees will touch the surface you are laying on when doing the exercise correctly.

3. Straight leg raises: While laying flat in bed bring one foot up and place it flat on the bed. lift the opposite leg up keep it straight do not bend the knee, bring it up to the level of the bent knee and again hold the leg up for a count of five. You will feel the stress on the thigh muscles you should not feel it in the back. If you feel back pain with this exercise disregard it.

These are just three simple exercises that will help increase your leg strength. there are many more out there but it all depends on your current strength levels and overall fitness as to what exercises to prescribe. By keeping your legs strong you help ward off in one way the ravages of osteoarthritis in the knees that plaque so many with age.

Compare Hearing Aids Before You Buy!

13 Aug

If you are looking to buy a hearing aid, the best advice anybody can give you is to shop around. Try out different models and brands, talk to you audiologist for their recommendation, and look for deals. There are lots of styles out there, and you want to find the one that is best for you. It’s a big and important investment!

Here are a few things to consider when hearing aid shopping:

Analog or Digital

If you’re already shopping for hearing aids, you might have noticed that analog hearing aids are cheaper than digital. Why is that? And what’s the difference?

The difference between analog and digital is that analog takes that sound and simply makes it louder. Digital hearing aids have a computer chip that analyzes and adjusts the sound for you.

What this means is that digital hearing aids have more features and can be customized. You can do some customizing with programmable analog hearing aids, but digital aids are much more flexible.

This also means that digital hearing aids are more expensive. Regular analog hearing aids are being phased out and replaced by programmable analog and digital. In fact, many dealers only sell digital aids, which are far more popular among hearing aid users.

Types Of Hearing Aids

There are a few broad categories of hearing aids, based on the placement of the aid itself.

* Completely In The Canal (CIC) – With CIC hearing aids, the mechanism is in a tiny plastic case that goes all the way into the ear canal. These hearing aids are the smallest available, so the available features are limited. Because they are small, the batteries have a short lifespan. CIC hearing aids are also the most expensive. They are best for those who suffer mild to moderate hearing loss.

* In The Canal (ITC) – These are similar to the Completely In The Canal hearing aids, except that they don’t go all the way into the ear canal. Like the CIC aids, they are small and quite expensive, but you can put more add-on features on them.

* In The Ear (ITE) – These hearing aids sit in the concha and helix of the ear. This is the part of the ear that is shaped like a bowl. In The Ear aids are larger than CICs or ITCs, and they mostly fill up the bowl. They are recommended for mild to severe hearing loss.

One drawback to In The Ear hearing aids is that they are known to sometimes pick up feedback and wind noise. This depends on the quality of the model and also the correct placement in the ear. If you are hearing wind or feedback, try adjusting the hearing aid, or talk to your audiologist.

In The Ear hearing aids are quite large, so they are great for using add-on features. They are much more flexible than the CICs or ITCs.

* Behind The Ear (BTE) – This type of hearing aid is a little plastic case that sits just behind the ear. It is connected to the earmold by a piece of plastic tubing.

These are the most flexible hearing aids, and are effective for any range of hearing loss. They are the most flexible and can be used by any age. The downside is that they are also the biggest and most visible, although companies are making models smaller and more inconspicuous.

Behind The Ears are the most powerful, and the easiest to customize. If you prefer to get add-on features, BTE’s might be the best for you.

Add-On Features

There are many kinds of extra features you can get for your hearing aids, to suit your particular needs. These include:

Adjustable Settings: You can have different settings which you can change. A switch allows you to instantly switch from one setting to another. For example, you might have a setting that is good for noisy places.

Directional Microphones: Some hearing aid users choose this feature, which focuses on what is directly in front of you. This allows you to tune out background noise. It can be switch operated.

Telephone Adapters: This technology uses a telecoil which attaches to your telephone. It blocks out background noise so that you can hear the other end of the telephone better. The phone must be adaptable, and cordless phones and cell phones are usually not.

If you are thinking of using special add-on features, make sure that you buy a hearing aid that is compatible.

Debilitating Disease Arthritis and the Treatments of Arthritis Symptoms and Anxiety

13 Aug

Inflammation in the bone joints and its associated part is commonly referred as the Arthritis. The term “arthritis” looks in singular number though, it comprises of more than chronic 150 disorders of the rheumatoid disease. All these disorders take the full toll of the human life. Some time it confined the human body from his daily activities. At these points of time people search for the treatment for the arthritis symptoms and the anxiety.

The main symptoms of arthritis are the inflammation of various joints, stiffness, and swelling associated with redness and warmth. Due to all these symptoms people have the restrictive movements for long time. Tenderness of the joints can be present along with the temperature. The many forms of arthritis can involve symptoms affecting various organs of the body that do not directly involve the joints. Symptoms in some patients can also include non-specific fever, weight loss, fatigue and feeling unwell and the patients are bound to have the arthritis best treatment in order to suppressing the pain and inflammation in the joints.

The disease arthritis is commonly of three kinds. These are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and the Gout. There is some more type of arthritis along all these. These are Fibromyalgia, infectious arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and lupus.

Osteoarthritis is the most common among all the arthritis that are found among the people. More than 21 million people suffer from the disease Osteoarthritis. The most common reason behind Osteoarthritis is the repetitive movement of a particular organ. Osteoarthritis mainly affects the cartilages. Cartilages provide with the cushion for the bone-joint to avoid friction during the time of the movement. Cartilages are being decayed off by the invasion of the osteoarthritis.

In many cases what happen that a number of childhood injuries may turn into the Osteoarthritis. Low back relief is the major concern for the people who are affected with this. Osteoarthritis is a disease that affects joints in the body. It can involve any joint, but usually concerns hands and weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees, feet and spine.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most deadly among all the arthritis. Generally it is know as the autoimmune disease. With rheumatoid arthritis, the antibodies attack the membranes around the joints that cause swelling, pain and stiffness. In some cases, rheumatoid arthritis can cause deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis also causes inflammation of the sheaths around the tendons, the one that join muscles to bones.

Coping with arthritis and its associated symptoms can be minimized with the proper arthritis vitamin supplements and the dietary changes and the some physical work out.
