The Arthritis Bracelet – Fact Or Fiction?

06 May

Despite modern advances in medicine, alternative medicine has always been around as the cheaper, natural option, often times being the last resort. These alternatives usually have been passed on from generation to generation and are at times actually effective. Upon research, most of them have been found to have underlying scientific basis.

Arthritis bracelets are among the alternative treatments popularly embraced by consumers as aids to current arthritis pain management. The most accepted ones in the market are made of either copper or magnet. Although not yet conclusively proven to be effective as claimed, they enjoy widespread acceptance and have been reported in some studies to indeed have beneficial effects.

The Case of Copper

Wearing of copper bracelets was popularized in the 1970s as a means to stop arthritic pain. Copper from the bracelet is believed to be absorbed through the skin and into circulation. In one study, it was found that 13 mg of copper was absorbed in one month on average by people wearing the bracelets. This being an additional source of copper is believed to bring the beneficial effects of having copper in the diet.

Copper in the body is known to be required for the transport of calcium in the body and in building the matrix of bone. It has been found to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies on subjects wearing copper bracelets versus placebo control bracelets that are coated to resemble copper have been performed and they indicate possible benefits.

But results have not yet been conclusive enough to guarantee its effectiveness. Another concern regarding its use is that if indeed copper is absorbed through the skin, it is being absorbed in unregulated amounts that might possibly lead to toxicity. Consideration must be given to patients with zinc deficiency since excessive copper in the blood can further lead to its depletion.

Magnets for Pain Relief

Magnets are objects that produce a type of energy that is called magnetic fields. Magnets targeted to consumers for health uses are mostly static or permanent magnets. Magnetic bracelets are also popularly used to relieve arthritic pain and can also come in the form of mattresses and pads. Various manufacturers of these magnetic bracelets claim that magnets may effect pain relief by any of the following principles:

1. Magnets may change the the way the cells function.

2. It may potentially affect growth and life span of the cells.

3. They are believed to enhance blood flow, therefore increasing oxygen and nutrient supply to the different organs of the body. This is believed to happen because of the presence of the metal iron in the blood that can be affected by magnets.

4. Nerve cell response to pain is believed to be altered by weak pulses from magnets.

5. It may affect the way the brain responds to or perceives the pain.

6. Lastly, magnets might affect white blood cell production, which is involved in body defense against infection and inflammation.

Whatever the mechanism, the benefit from magnetic bracelets seems clinically useful based on different trials performed by researchers.

Are These for You?

Living with arthritic pain can be very crippling, and patients searching for alternatives or other adjuncts to pain relief should be careful when choosing forms of treatments. The beneficial effects of these bracelets have not yet been proven since different clinical trials have been giving conflicting results.

Furthermore, arthritis bracelets are not yet U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved and some companies’ claims of benefit have been contested by the FDA and Federal trade Commission (FTC). Despite these, there have been a lot of patients who attest to their effectiveness in relieving their pain and there are no reported toxicities by consumers as of this moment.

If a patient does decide to use arthritis bracelets, it should be borne in mind that consultation with their physician and proper prescribing of medications remain important and integral in the treatment of arthritis to decrease or control pain.

Since arthritis bracelets are not yet regulated and standardized, it would be wise for the consumers to always check the reputation of the company they are planning to buy from with existing consumer protection agencies. One should also be aware of possible contraindications of magnets or copper in certain disease conditions to avoid any untoward side effect.

Home Remedy for Athlete’s Foot – Apple Cider Vinegar

05 May

One of the oldest and most trusted home remedies is apple cider vinegar. This valuable product has been heavily relied upon throughout the ages to prevent and alleviate a number of ailments. It helps alkalize the body and is rich in potassium, which supports cell growth. Throughout history apple cider vinegar has been used to treat earaches, infections, arthritis, and as an aid in digestion. It has also been said to aid in the detoxification of bodily organs and eliminate warts. It is easily accessible, inexpensive and useful for a variety of disorders and conditions.

For all of these reasons, apple cider vinegar may be the best natural remedy for athlete’s foot. It is the ability of this type of vinegar to destroy fungal infections that makes it an ideal natural remedy for athlete’s foot fungus. Not only is it considerably less expensive than prescription drugs and even over the counter medications, pure apple cider vinegar relieves the itching that is caused by athlete’s foot making it a gentle, all natural answer to this common and painful problem. And best of all, you may already have it in your cupboard.

Athlete’s foot is a well-known, persistent ailment caused by fungal growth on the feet. This type of infection occurs when the highly contagious tinea pedis fungus contacts the skin. Often the most affected area of the foot is between the toes, where it is especially warm and moist; however, it may also spread to the rest of the foot. When athlete’s foot fungus is given an opportunity to develop, it may first result in an itchy red rash, typically beginning between the fourth and fifth toe. If the infection is not remedied, the skin may become soft and extremely sensitive to the touch. In the most severe cases, the edges of the afflicted area will become white and the skin can peel away, creating a milky discharge.

To combat this unfortunate condition, people have turned time and again to apple cider vinegar. This type of vinegar is made from the liquid extracted from crushed apples. Sugar and yeast are added to encourage fermentation, which turns the sugars into alcohol. It is in the second fermentation process when acetic acid-forming bacteria transform the alcohol into vinegar.

This acidic product can be used to treat feet that have become raw, cracked, and damaged by the fungus that causes athlete’s foot. Not only does it relieve the persistent itch that comes with the condition, it also has been reported to rid the body of the fungus that causes the condition. It may not have the most desirable odor, but the relief that is immediately felt as sore feet contact the vinegar will surely be worth it.

An apple cider vinegar foot soak is an effective way to fight athlete’s foot fungus. Simply mix one part pure all natural apple cider vinegar with one part warm water and soak for 20 minutes. Feet should be cleaned with a gentle soap both before and after the treatment. It is necessary to make sure that the feet are thoroughly dried after the treatment to prevent the fungus from spreading in a moist environment. If necessary, it is permissible to use this method of treatment twice daily. Depending upon the severity of the condition, the feet should be rid of the fungus within one to two weeks of regular home treatments.

For less severe cases of athlete’s foot fungus, use a washcloth or cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar. Gently rub the cloth over the affected areas. This treatment works especially well for children who may not be willing to sit for a foot soak as the combination of the vinegar and the rubbing of the washcloth allow instant relief from the itchiness caused by the fungus.

It is wise to take some common sense precautions to lessen your exposure to the fungus as preventing athlete’s foot fungus is typically much easier than curing it, it. The most important step you can take is to keep the feet dry, especially between the toes. Ensure that the environment in your socks is inhospitable to fungal growth. Socks that are made of cotton, wool, or other natural materials allow feet to breathe and remain dry. If your feet commonly sweat, see that your socks remain clean and dry, even if this means changing socks during the day. Choose shoes that are well ventilated and give them a chance to dry out before wearing them again. It is also important to reduce the risk of exposure by wearing waterproof sandals or shoes in public showers, locker rooms, and any other warm damp place that may host tinea pedis. Taking proper care of your feet and treating them with all natural apple cider vinegar should ensure that the athlete’s foot fungus clears up and does not return.

The Side Effects of Prescription Sleep Aids

05 May

If you suffer from insomnia, it is likely that you are taking prescription sleep aids. Unfortunately, quite a few medications prescribed for insomnia bring with them a variety of side effects. While these can help temporary insomnia to some extent, especially in small doses, long-term sleep problems must be tackled in a different way. Interestingly, most doctors advise medication only as a last resort, as there are other remedies that are safe and help induce sleep.

Among the worst side effects of prescription sleep aids is that of addiction and dependence. The common prescription medicines are sedatives, tranquilizers and drugs used to treat anxiety. Obviously, you need a doctor’s prescription for these since they are habit-forming and can be harmful to your health.

A major problem with hypnotics is their tendency to lose their effectiveness when you become used to them. You may also develop withdrawal symptoms if you stop them, bringing that insomnia right back. Tapering the dose gradually over several weeks usually tackles this problem.

There are also over the counter, or OTC, medications for which prescriptions are not necessary. These are diphenhydramine and dimenhydrinate and are used to resolve minor insomnia. You could, however, develop dry mouth, blurred vision and dizziness. Moreover, if you already suffer from cardiac problems or angina, urinary problems or other health issues, you should avoid taking OTC drugs like Nytol and Sominex. Incidentally, melatonin supplements are supposed to treat insomnia. Even though these are used widely, not much information is available about their safety. Because they are classed as supplements and not drugs, they are not tested by the Food & Drug Administration and may include unknown ingredients. If you have been advised to take these, think twice before you act and only buy reliable brands.

Prescription medicines for insomnia are best taken in low doses. Some of these are: Benzodiazepines – these go by the brand names Ativan, Xanax, Halcion, Restoril, among others. Common side effects may include respiratory disorders, sleepiness in the daytime, loss of memory, and fluctuating moods. You can certainly not take sleeping aids with alcohol or medications for ulcers as the interaction can be dangerous.

Non-benzodiazepines – available under the brand name Ambien. People who take these sometimes complain of nausea, dizziness, headaches, nightmares and restlessness.

Antidepressants – these drugs are thought to help with insomnia connected to depression. Examples are Paxil, Serzone and Desyrel, to name some. These prescription drugs bring on fewer side effects than the others.

So what do you do? The point is that, in order to avoid the serious side effects of prescription sleeping aids, you should look at the causes of your insomnia rather than treating the symptom itself. If worry is causing your sleeplessness, all you may need is an antidepressant rather than sleeping pills. Doctors recommend that you avoid benzodiazepine which can be addictive. Instead, opt for something that is non-addictive. Moreover, take sleeping pills only when you absolutely need to, not as a habit. If you happen to be a woman going through menopause, sleeplessness can be tackled with hormone replacement therapy. Ultimately, to decide which prescription sleeping aid is best for you, you should talk to your health care provider so that the treatment is based on your specific medical history and symptoms.

Knee Pain? Maybe It’s Your Feet

04 May

There are several painful conditions of the knee that may be caused by problems with your feet. The knee joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. It is a hinge joint, a sliding joint and a rotating joint all at the same time. The proper and pain-free functioning of the knee requires near perfect alignment of the bones, ligaments and tendons that make up the knee joint. Pain in the knee is usually an early warning sign that something is wrong with the alignment. It is important to address these problems early to avoid serious, long term problems such as severe arthritis.

The improper alignment that causes knee pain is often the result of improper alignment of the joints of the foot and ankle. Let me give some examples.

Pain on the inside part of the knee may be caused by bursitis at the location where three of the tendons from the thigh muscles (sartorius, gracilis and semitendinosus) come together and insert into the upper/inner part of the tibia (bone of the lower leg). This condition is known as Pes Anserine bursitis. Pes Anserine is Latin for “goose foot”. I suppose it is called goose foot because these three tendons coming together look somewhat like a goose’s foot. The pain is caused by inflammation of the bursa beneath these three tendons. A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that is found where tendons and ligaments rub against bone. The bursa is designed to prevent the bone from irritating and damaging these tendons and ligaments as the rub back and forth over the bone. When these bursa become inflamed this is known as bursitis. Pes anserine bursitis is inflammation of the bursa beneath the three tendons that form the goose foot. Pes Anserine bursitis can be caused by excessive pronation of the foot. The excessive pronation (see article on normal foot motion) causes excessive stretching of these tendons which over time results in inflammation. The treatment and prevention of this condition involves an arch support to prevent excessive foot pronation.

Pain on the outside of the knee is sometimes caused by a condition known as iliotibial band syndrome. The iliotibial band runs from the pelvis down the outside of the leg and attaches to the outside part of the knee. Problems with the foot together with overuse (such as running or bicycling) can lead to inflammation where the iliotibial band inserts into the outer knee. There are several different foot problems that can cause this inflammation. If the person is flat-footed (over-pronatnor) this causes the tibia (lower leg bone) to excessively internally rotate. This increases the stretch on the iliotibial band and causes inflammation. On the other hand if someone has a high-arched foot, the foot is in a supinated position (see normal foot motion) and this too can cause excessive stretch on the iliotibial band and inflammation. These two very different types of foot problems result in the same painful condition (iliotibial band syndrome). However the two problems require very different treatments. In order to correct the problem it is essential to determine what exactly is causing the problem.

Knee arthritis can be caused or exacerbated by problems with the foot. Someone that has arthritis pain on the part of knee closest to the midline (medial compartment) may have a supinated foot that contributes to a bow-legged type of stance. Someone with pain in the lateral compartment (the outer part of the knee furthest from the midline) may be flat-footed, a hyper-pronator, which leads to a knock-kneed type of stance. Through the proper use of a foot orthotic I believe that we can, over time, reduce the load on the painful knee compartment, reduce the pain and at least slow down the degeneration of the cartilage.

Pain in the center of the knee is often cause by chondromalacia patella, also known as retropatellar (behind the kneecap) pain syndrome. This is often seen in someone with excessive pronation (flat-feet). As the knee straightens and bends the kneecap is supposed to ride smoothly in a cartilage-lined groove on the lower end of the femur (thigh bone). Someone that is a hyper-pronator has excessive internal rotation of the tibia. This excessive internal rotation changes the angle that the kneecap rides up and down in this groove (known as the Q angle or Quadriceps angle). Over time this leads to irritation behind the kneecap and the retropatellar pain syndrome. An arch support or orthotic can be very helpful in treating this condition.

In conclusion I have discussed a few of the common causes of knee pain that can be relieved or at least improved through the use of a simple foot orthotic. For more information please visit. http://www.Archatomics.com/

Herbal Remedies For Arthritis

04 May

Arthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. Despite lot of research and effort, an effective cure has still eluded us. All that can be offered are the anti inflammatory and pain killers like Aspirin. This month, we make an attempt to suggest some very effective Ayurvedic remedies for Arthrities where nothing else has worked for you. Plus… More tips for Arthritis in the end.

An arthritis herbal remedy is one which is plant-based, and is reported to relieve inflammation and/or pain associated with arthritis by its various users. Both men and women report that the arthritis herbal remedy natural progesterone and Arthrit-Eze gives relief from arthritis, aching joints and sore muscles.

Herbal Arthritis Remedies

Burdock Root – Burdock Root is a time proven remedy for arthritis pain. It is an excellant blood purifier and blood cleanser and can help to reduce joint swelling and calcification.

Comfrey – Comfrey is one of nature’s greatest arthritis remedies. Comfrey soothes and heals inflamed tissues, and it helps reduce swelling and pain in a most remarkable way. Comfrey root is made into a tincture for external use only.

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa): An American Indian treatment for arthritis involved using the root of black cohosh. There are five species in the Cimicifuga genus worldwide that have been used to treat rheumatism. Black cohosh contains aspirin-like substances as well as other anti- inflammatory and antispasmodic constituents.

Dosage and Directions: Simmer 1 teaspoon of black cohosh root in 1 cup of boiling water for twenty minutes. Strain and drink the tea in 2 divided doses during the day. Do this for two to three weeks, and then take a break for seven to ten days before starting the treatment again.

Shallaki also known as boswellia (Boswellia serrata), comes from a tree that yields gum when its bark is peeled away. In clinical trials, promising results were observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic colitis, Crohn’s disease. Researchers found that standardized Boswellia extract significantly reduced swelling and pain and usually reduced morning stiffness for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. The following have been used traditionally to treat rheumatoid arthritis: Shallaki also known as boswellia (Boswellia serrata), comes from a tree that yields gum when its bark is peeled away. In clinical trials, promising results were observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic colitis, Crohn’s disease.

The Scottish and other Nordic peoples discovered years ago that Cod Liver Oil reduced pain and stiffness in the joints, especially during the frigid winter months. Cod Liver Oil is available in supplement form at most health food stores, and has been shown in studies to have numerous health benefits, including reduction of pain from rheumatoid arthritis.

Other groups that should hesitate before using herbal remedies are women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, because herbals can act like drugs, Pleuss says, along with anyone under 18 and adults 65 and older. “Older people often metabolize medications, including herbals, differently than younger adults do. Herbals have not been widely tested for their effects on growing children.” Several recent studies have been done on children to measure the efficacy of echinacea and garlic for their widely touted potential to relieve cold symptoms. Neither was found any more effective than a placebo.

Cure Sleeping Problems – How to Cure Sleeping Problems From Home

02 May

If we wish to cure sleeping problems safely, we need to become more aware of what we are doing to ourselves when we turn to things such as medications. The well known fact of the addictive qualities of sleeping pills, be they gotten over the counter or by prescription, is dangerous enough. But when we coupled with the factor of their ceasing to be effective after only weeks of use, dependency is fairly inevitable. Resulting bouts of rebound insomnia just adds to the self injury.

There is a more non-intrusive cure which can be safely implemented by those with sleeping problems. The use of audio therapy has had a number of breakthroughs in this field, including the once popular binaural audio therapy. It uses two different sets of tones and pulses, one set for each ear, of almost the same frequency as each other, but slightly out of phase. The brain then processes this information as one signal inducing the proper brainwave activity most conducive to sleep.

What should be obvious here is the major drawback in this cure. Those with sleeping problems have it bad enough, but then there’s the awkwardness of trying to sleep with stereo headphones on without them coming off during sleep and waking us up all over again. Clearly for many, this was a formidable handicap. Another type of similar approach uses isochronic pulses which require no stereo equipment, and has proven to be the most health generating technique to cure sleeping problems. Tones and pulses of certain changing frequencies train the brain and induce the needed brainwave activity to allow sleep, in much the same way that a motorist’s heartbeat may attune itself to the “beat” of the passing white lines in the road. Having no risk of dependency, and utilizing the science of nature and vice-versa, this is the safest of methods in this field.

Arthritis – Symptoms, Treatment and Natural Remedies to Relieve Arthritis Pain

01 May

Many people live with joint pain on a regular basis and just assume they’re getting arthritis, but not all joint pain is caused by arthritis, and not all joint pain (or arthritis) is treated in the same way. That’s why it’s important to recognize the symptoms so your doctor can correctly identify and treat what is wrong with you, rather than treat you incorrectly and find the correct diagnosis later.

Joint pain is the most common known symptom of arthritis. The pain can be mild to severe, and is generally persistent. While it may be worse when you stand, walk, run or perform other activities, this doesn’t mean it goes away when you’re resting. In addition to being painful, arthritic joints tend to become swollen, red and inflamed. While the pain and swelling are generally just an inconvenience to begin with, if arthritis is not treated they can become severe and severely limit your physical activity.

Some arthritis causes bones to actually build up. This causes pain, but will also begin to deform your joints, particularly if it’s in the fingers and hands. You may notice hard lumps start to grow on the sides of fingers or other affected joints.

Another common symptom of arthritis is the loss of range of motion. You may not be able to bend a joint as far as you used to because of pain or swelling. While minor loss of range of motion can be mildly annoying, if they symptoms get worse it can begin to affect your daily life and activities.

There are other less common symptoms associated with arthritis that have little to nothing to do with the joints themselves. People with certain types of arthritis can experience fever, fatigue, mood problems and weight loss.

Most people are surprised to find out there are over 100 different types of arthritis. Plus, even if two people have the same kind, they will probably have somewhat different symptoms. For proper arthritis diagnosis, you should always see your doctor.

When you visit your doctor, she will likely take a history of your symptoms, perform a physical exam, and perform x-rays and other tests to confirm the diagnosis, but also to rule out other conditions that could be causing your symptoms.

While many people can treat minor arthritis with over-the-counter medication, you should still see a physician to make sure it isn’t something more serious. They can also help recommend what kind of medication or other therapy would be best for your specific case.

Simply living with arthritis is not something you have to do. While arthritis is not curable, there are many treatments to manage the pain, as well as slow progression and treat the underlying cause of the problem.

There are also some natural remedies which can help arthritis pain:

Ginger Liniment

This healing massage oil is great for muscle aches and stiff joints.

* 2-inch piece fresh Ginger

* 1/2 cup Almond oil

Grate Ginger and combine with oil in a small, nonmetallic saucepan. Cover and simmer over low heat for 1 hour. Remove from heat and steep for another hour. Strain oil to remove bits of Ginger. Using a nonmetallic funnel, pour liniment into a four-ounce glass bottle with a tight-fitting screw top. Attach the following instructions on a gift tag:

To use, gently massage the oil into affected area twice a day until symptoms have disappeared.

Mustard Plaster for Arthritis Pain

Here’s an old fashioned remedy that I use to relieve my Arthritis pains. I make what you call a Mustard plaster.

To do this you need to mix together 2 parts flour with 1 part Mustard powder, then add some water to make a paste. Spread it on a clean cloth of some sort, fold it in half and press against the skin. Don’t put the salve directly on the skin since it can burn.

You can also use this to loosen phlegm or for sore muscles

Arthritis and Gout Oil

* 1 Tablespoon fresh crushed Rosemary
* 3 teaspoons Celery seeds crushed
* 1 large Chilli crushed
* 250 ml oil any Carrier Oil but canola

Sterilize jar, place oil and other ingredients [make sure it covers] close, shake place in sunny spot for 10 days shaking every day strain into dark sterilized jars.

FANTASTIC for gout, Arthritis or aches and pains

Whatcha Eating Mom – How To Be A Better Example To Your Kids

01 May

Does your child have a sonar system like mine? My son Ethan could be down the hall, sirens blaring from his toy fire truck. But when I reach for a snack ever so quietly from the pantry, he’s standing right in front of me in two seconds flat. “What’s mommy having?” he asks grinning from ear to ear. You can guess the next sentence. “I want some.” The beep of the toaster oven, the opening of the freezer, the crackling of a bag…all of these sounds translate into, “What is mommy having and can I have some?”

We can tell our kids to eat vegetables, fruits and whole grains until we’re blue in the face. But ultimately, our kids will follow what we do. What are your eating habits? Will you have a healthy child if he or she follows in your footsteps? If the answer is no, then it’s time to make some nutritional changes.

According to health author and speaker Danna Demetre, these are the top six nutritional mistakes most moms make with their children:

1. Too much juice

2. Too many hydrogenated fats

3. Too much sugar and soda

4. Too little fiber

5. Too little protein

6. Too few omega-3 fatty acids

How are you doing with this list, both for your children and yourself? You might be tempted to think, “Well, at least I’m doing better than lots of moms I know.” Don’t compare yourself to your friend who feeds her kids donuts and cookies for breakfast. It doesn’t matter what other kids are eating. It only matters what your kids are eating. Are they getting the best shot at a healthy life from the foods you are serving them?

It’s been predicted that one out of two children will develop juvenile diabetes in the next 10 years because of poor eating habits. That is staggering! You have to do everything in your power to make sure your child is not one of them. When you make the commitment to cut out soda, sugar, bad fats, and junk food from your diet, your kids will reap amazing health benefits. They will catch your great eating habits. The opposite is also true. That’s why it’s up to you to model eating habits that will dramatically reduce your kid’s risk for diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer. Now isn’t that a worthwhile reason to eat right, exercise and lose weight?

The next time your child catches you in the kitchen and asks, “Whatcha eating mommy?” make sure it’s something you’d be proud to share!
