All Greek to Me – Greek Myth Archetypes, President Obama, and His Challengers

12 Apr

Therapist and Jungian analyst Jean Shinoda Bolen proposes that all of us unconsciously model the Greek gods and goddesses in our personalities. Clearly, Hillary Clinton is a Demeter. In her book Goddesses in Everywoman: A New Psychology of Women, Bolen describes the Classical depiction of the goddess of grain: a matronly woman with beautiful blonde hair, often dressed in blue. Demeter was responsible for the harvest, and as the goddess responsible for making sure the world was fed, was a mother-figure to the whole human race. The senator from New York clearly sees herself in the mother-to-the-world role. Her law career was focused on the rights of women and children. She advocated universal health care and chaired the U.S. delegation to the United Nations’ women’s conference as First Lady.

The woman who follows the Demeter type is more than just a universal mother, however. She also has an overwhelming need to have a child of her own. In Classical mythology, Demeter had just one child, Persephone. Demeter strategically chose the most powerful of the gods, Zeus, to father her child, with the deliberate intent of giving birth to a powerful goddess. Okay, maybe that wasn’t exactly the former First Lady’s plan when she gave birth to Chelsea. Still, consider her description of her first impression of Bill Clinton, in her book Living History. “He was tall and handsome,” Clinton writes. ” . . . He also had a vitality that seemed to shoot out of his pores.” She certainly sounds thunderstruck by a larger-than-life figure, if not actually the King of the Gods himself.

A Demeter woman doesn’t necessarily expect a husband to be faithful. Jean Shinoda Bolen tells us, “For a Demeter woman, marriage in itself is not an overriding priority.” As long as she still gets to play the role of universal mother, a Demeter woman can put up with a cheating spouse.

The Demeter archetype is also the model of persistence and focus. When her daughter was abducted, Demeter searched the entire world to find her. The harvest suffered as a result; the entire world nearly starved until she found what she was looking for. She would not relent until she obtained her goal, no matter the costs. Some would say that the Demeter model perfectly represents Hillary Clinton’s intense drive.

Bolen has also written Gods in Everyman: A New Psychology of Men’s Lives and Loves. In it, she describes eight male archetypes, subdivided into father-gods (including Zeus) and second-generation gods. Interestingly, Obama, McCain and Huckabee all fit the archetypes of “son” gods.

Barack Obama is an Apollo, the archetype named for the Classical sun god. Bolen describes the Apollo archetype as “the favorite son,” which may be an apt description of Obama, whose charm causes lifelong Republicans to rethink their voting strategies. An Apollo is also “an upholder of law and order.” Clearly, as a lawyer and as a senator, that fits Obama. As a lawgiver, an Apollo archetype may be a bit of an idealist. He may see law and order as a way to bring peace, a theme that runs again and again through Obama’s speeches.

Given Obama’s plan for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and opposition to the war, it will come as no surprise that an Apollo is not a warrior. An Apollo prefers not to be directly in the thick of the action, preferring instead to watch from the sidelines, making rational decisions based on observations and unswayed by his emotions. Obama took exactly this tactic in the Senate during the lead-up to the war in Iraq.

In direct contrast to the Apollo archetype is the Classical war-god, Ares. John McCain is clearly an Ares. That McCain served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years before he was first elected to the House of Representatives tells you about his warrior nature.

The ancient Greeks considered Ares not only the god of war, but also the most powerful of the second-generation gods. Though sometimes seen as a hot-headed destroyer, Ares had another side: he was also a protector of the community. McCain clearly sees himself in the role of protector. He has called national security “the most sacred responsibility vested in a president.” His platform also includes strict constructionist philosophy on the Constitution (protecting us from its being abused for political reasons), lobbying and ethics reform (protecting us from questionable political deals), and “common-sense stewardship” of the environment, including taking the threat of global warming seriously, protecting us from our own environmental abuse.

Just as he has two roles, the Ares archetype also gets two reactions. According to Bolen, Ares was either reviled for his recklessness and the destruction he caused, or applauded for his courage. McCain also gets two reactions. His supporters love him for his courage to reach across party lines on a number of issues. His detractors consider the same trait as disloyalty to the Republican party’s conservative base.

Mike Huckabee is the hardest to fit neatly into any of the ancient Greek god archetypes. He seems to be a Dionysus, “the divine child.” At first, the ancient Greek god of wine may seem an odd choice for the former Arkansas governor. Dionysus is known for wild parties and reckless excess, unlike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor. Still, there are similar personality traits.

Consider Huckabee’s 110-pound weight loss, which he described in his book Quit Digging Your Grave With A Knife and Fork. Huckabee’s radical change in diet and lifestyle hardly would have been necessary unless his habits were a bit excessive- and one might say, reckless- before. And comparing modern Christianity to ancient Paganism may be a tough sell to some, there was a deeply religious bent to Dionysus. He was considered the mediator between the gods and mortals. As a presidential candidate deeply ruled and guided by his religious faith, is it too much of a stretch to imagine that Mike Huckabee sees himself as a mediator between heaven and earth?

Dionysus, Bolen tells us, was also an “eternal adolescent.” What could be more “eternally adolescent” than a rock band? Huckabee is, after all, the bass player for Capitol Offense, with whom he’s opened for Willie Nelson and played the House of Blues.

Some Pertinent Facts About Arthritis of the Hip Joint

11 Apr

When a person is diagnosed with arthritis of the hip joint, then there are chances of that person to suffer from osteoarthritis also, which is also a common form of arthritis of the hip joint. Osteoarthritis is also occasionally known as degenerative joint illness and wear-and-tear arthritis. Avian Flu Hype – It’s Strictly For The Birds

11 Apr

If you listen to mass media reports, you hear a lot about the coming “bird flu pandemic” which supposedly will bring havoc and possible fatalities worldwide. You hear we must “protect ourselves” from this upcoming disaster with vaccinations.

Is all this Bird Flu hysteria –a Hoax or the “Real Deal”? It’s “for the birds,” and this is why.

Various health practitioners, including Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, an osteopathic doctor from Cleveland, Ohio, disagree with the hysteria.

Her websites show that she is an incredible investigator of health issues. She has published several CDs, DVDs and books to educate us about vaccinations, about medical breakthroughs, and about medical controversies.

She explains that the Avian virus scientists are concerned about is H5N1, and migratory birds are supposedly responsible for its being carried to various countries.

Reports claim this virus has killed 100 people worldwide, reportedly from inflammation on lung tissue. They assert that there could “possibly” be human-to-human transmission of this virus (which has not happened with this type virus) and, therefore, an influenza pandemic “may” result.

Actual migratory patterns of bird species are not known, and the reported outbreaks have not coincided with migratory birds arriving in specific locations.

Dr. Tenpenny believes this bird flu scare tactic will essentially benefit three groups:

1) Pharmaceutical companies because they’ll profit from billions of dollars worth of vaccines and drugs.

2) Global poultry producers that will survive the mass killings of their huge population of “factory-farmed, genetically-modified birds.” The small farmers will be forced out of business and the “Big Guys” will rule the worldwide poultry market.

3) Politicians will use this hysteria as an opportunity to regulate entire businesses, implement mass vaccination programs and put into operation a police state as a consequence of the pandemic, further eroding the U.S. Constitution.

During Dr. Tenpenny’s investigative research on vaccinations from our government, she found that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) wrote a plan in 2004 to increase flu shot sales.

This Plan was called “Seven Step Recipe for Generating Interest In and Demand For Flu Vaccinations.” This Seven-Step Plan recommended using TV and the printed page to “convince people that the flu is deadly” and the only way to survive was to get a flu shot!

I was in a local supermarket in 2004 where a crowd of angry senior citizens had just been told the flu vaccine supply had just run out, and they were ready to start rioting.

They had been indoctrinated by TV commercials telling them, they just had to get these shots or they possibly wouldn’t survive that flu season! (Balderdash!)

You don’t think our government uses TV and radio and magazines to manipulate our minds? Think again, American citizen.

But the plan didn’t work as well in 2005, and people weren’t standing in line to get their vaccine shots. So the CDC decided to hype the threat of bird flu to get the public riled up to take shots and to make our government set aside more money to prepare for a pandemic.

Unbelievable, isn’t it? But true. An “expert”, Peter Sandman, wrote “Ten Step Plan” for our government’s pandemic preparedness activities and its plan to deal with the emergency when it arrives. This is to create public fear and communicate the “international risk” of the bird flu. Scary, isn’t it!

Better still, Dr. Tenpenny’s description of this 10-Step Plan is that it will arouse the American public to accept vaccines to “protect themselves from the coming pandemic.” Some examples follow:

The Second Step is of the “10 Step Plan” is “don’t be afraid to frighten people. Get them all stirred up. Scare them.”

The Fifth Step is “give the people something to do. Fear is not enough. They have to physically do something after being emotionally aroused to the danger. They must get the vaccination!”

Here’s our 4-Fold Health Plan for Individuals:

1) Fortify your Mind. Don’t allow yourself to be a victim of propaganda. Don’t fear and don’t panic.

2) Fortify your Body against any virus. Dr. Joseph Mercola encourages you to get all the sleep your body needs to be healthful, realizing that deep sleep refuels your immune system.

He says a healthful diet and lifestyle will give you stamina and protection against outside germs. Exercising gives energy and reinforces the immune system.

Washing your hands regularly fights off germs. He also says eat plenty of garlic to build up resistance to problematic issues. Use natural supplements. Focus on good health!

3) Fortify your Information. THINK FOR YOURSELF. Research. Investigate issues. Don’t accept everything you hear on TV or the radio or what you read in magazines to be TRUTH.

Too often it is our own government’s propaganda to deceive us into doing what they want us to do. Find out who will benefit from the issues. When in doubt about what’s going on, always follow the money trail.

4) Fortify your Faith. The Scriptures warn us not to be deceived, especially in these ends times days. Even if you aren’t a Bible-reading person, you can see that this era is characterized by massive, brassy deception.

Bird flu hype is strictly for the birds. You can’t base a case for something based on continuous use of the word “supposedly” and by treating theories as facts.

Golf Swing Teaching Aids That You Should Consider

10 Apr

When you are in search of golf swing teaching aids, you will actually find millions and millions that you can choose from. With this large figure, you cannot really expect that all of them would be beneficial for you. And if you aim to purchase all of the teaching aids that you can find in the market, you just might find yourself on the losing end – financially speaking. The key here is to choose only the aids that can help improve that certain portion of your swing that needs improvement. Here are some of the teaching aids you just might want to consider getting.

One such aid is the speed radar. There are a number of gold instructional schools that make use of this gadget, which is a strong indication that it is indeed one of the most effective teaching aids for the game of golf. The great thing about the speed radar is that it actually makes use of a Doppler radar in determining the speed the ball takes upon contact or impact. This gadget can really motivate any beginner to pay more attention on achieving better contact, since this would result in longer drives for your ball.

Another teaching aid that you can consider getting is the impact label. From the name of the aid itself, you actually stick these labels onto your club so that you would leave a mark when you hit the ball. These impact labels help you see for yourself which particular portion of your club makes contact with your ball. This way, you can determine if you are indeed hitting your ball as squarely as you should. Remember that for your drives to be longer and of better aim, it is important to establish good contact here.

The teaching board is yet another tool that can help you greatly here. The teaching board lets you determine how well your address goes – and not just your address – but other parts of your swing as well. Moreover, the teaching board comes with great information about how you should use the different clubs that you have in your golf club. This is the great thing about the teaching board, particularly because beginners would not really know the basics about using the many golf bags that come with the game.

Vitamins For Cold and Flu

09 Apr

The most common cause of illness in adults and children are colds or upper respiratory infections. It’s commonly believed that we ‘catch’ colds, but this is not exactly the case. Our bodies are surrounded by over 200 viruses which our body usually combats. However, if we become run down or our immune systems are too weak to combat the infection, we are susceptible to ‘catching a cold or flu’.

A few supplements are said to help prevent and treat cold and flu including Echinacea, Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin A.

Echinacea is a natural treatment that is widely used in the treatment of cold and flu. It is said to activate the boy’s T-cells which are an essential part of the immune response. Echinacea is believed to have anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and immulostimulant qualities.

Echinacea has been shown to help treat cold and flu when ingested in large amounts at 1200mg, three times a day for up to 8 weeks, however it should never be taken at this high dosage for longer than eight weeks.

Echinacea is more suitable for generally healthy people who may be susceptible to frequent minor infections. It’s recommended that these people take 800mg of the dried herb three times a day in times of weakened immunity.

Vitamin C has also been shown to boost the immune system when 100mg of vitamin C is taken daily. If vitamin C is to be used to treat a cold or flu, it’s suggested that 1000mg per day might help shorten the duration of the cold or flu.

Zinc is a vital nutrient that is used in the production of hormones that support the immune system to fight viruses. If 13.3mg of zinc acetate is taken at the first sign of infection, zinc is said to significantly reduce the period of illness.

Vitamin A is said to prevent infections and it is believed that the recommended daily dosage of 5000iu should be easily ingested within a balanced diet through foods like carrots, spinach and capsicum and supplementation is rarely required.

Whilst all of these nutrients and vitamins are said to have benefits for the prevention and treatment of cold and flu, you should not under any circumstances substitute qualified medical advice with information found in this article. The author does not give or purport to give any medical or healthcare advice and is not qualified to do so.

Buying Discount Hearing Aids Online Gives Variety and Savings

08 Apr

Consider buying your hearing aid online. There are many sites offering hearing and there are models at amazingly discounted prices. You will soon notice there are devices as low as $300. That is a good price. But why are these so much cheaper than others? Like most other consumables if it seems too good to be true then it probably is.

Of course you want to get the best value for your money. For those of us who do experience problems with hearing it is an important sense to have. It is quite possible to find a cost effective hearing aid online if you have some background knowledge and if you are guided by common sense. You must find a supplier who gives a 30 day trial.

If you can negotiate a longer period then do so. Whether you buy online or not should not affect the importance of a trial period. The model may not be suitable for you and then you can return it and try out a different model. This means you will not have to waste money.

A hearing aid is an investment not only financially but also in your quality of life. Hearing properly means that you will not incur unnecessary mishaps. The right model for you is the one that can be adjusted to your unique requirements. But the supplier that you choose must also be willing to make these adjustments for you until you are confident about doing it yourself.

Make certain that your Hearing Aid comes with a warranty. Take the time to go through the small print. This is for your own protection should there be any future problems to contend with. If a website request you to sign a waiver it is best to refuse. In actual fact, it is unfair to expect a consumer to give up any rights.

There are suppliers who want it all their own way. Never buy online until you have spoken to an audiologist. A professional is the only person who can give you accurate advice regarding what you need from a hearing aid.

Once you have seen an audiologist face to face and he or she has examined you it may be time to buy online. You will only make the right purchase when you have all the correct information from the right source. There are sites that offer hearing aids wholesale and these are recommended by professionals.

Golf Tips To Help Your Putting Stroke

08 Apr

Putting a golf ball can be difficult at the best of times. For many people, when they have problems putting, they try everything under the sun including a various string of new putters. But the main thing they forget to do is to go back to the main, basic fundamentals. Most times they simply need to correct the problem they may not realize they have. Follow along as we give you a few brief golf tips that will help you to putt more consistently.

Putting tips have to be very simple in order to be effective. Over thinking disrupts concentration on the putt and only makes things worse. That’s why it is so important to return to the fundamentals when you can’t seem to putt as well as you did previously. Quite often, when people start to putt badly they develop the yips, the term that applies to the herky-jerky putting motion that creeps in. The main cause of the yips is misalignment. You can correct this by consciously making sure your eyes are directly over top of the ball along the line of the putt. When people end up with misalignment problems it’s usually because their eyes are not dead center over the line of the putt to the hole. Your eyes can be directly over the ball or a little behind it but they should always be dead center in the middle of the golf ball along the line of the putt to the hole.

Here are a couple of putting tips to help you make sure you are lined up over the ball properly. Almost every putter in existence has a straight line painted or etched on the top of the putting blade. Always make sure that line is pointed directly through the ball to the hole. You should be able to tell fairly easily if the line is angled a degree or two off the line through the ball to the hole. But here is an added, unique little tip that will help to make your aim a little better. Mark your ball, pick it up and look for the lettering. Now, when you set the ball back down, align the string of letters so they are aimed directly at the hole. Now when you set back up behind the ball, the line on the top of the putter should aim through the letters in a direct line to the hole. Now instead of guessing, you have some visible markings to help you determine if you are set up properly over the top of the ball with your putter square to the hole. This is a method used by many of the top professionals on the tour today.

Putting strokes can come and go even for the best of professionals. Sometimes our eyes can play tricks at us when we think we are set up properly over the ball. Whenever you have problems on the putting greens, it always good to resort to do the basic fundamentals. Get back to the basics and you will soon be dropping them into the cup again in no time.

Curing Rheumatoid Arthritis The Old-Fashioned Way

07 Apr

Many years ago, out in rural central Texas where I lived at the time, my neighbor Gladys suffered severe rheumatoid arthritis. After failing to get relief from a series of medications, Gladys discovered her personal super-food: catfish.

The days Gladys ate catfish, specifically, the days she ate catfish caught in the creek that ran behind both of our houses, her arthritis seemed to go away. Soon she dressed in jeans, long sleeves, and her sunbonnet and carrying a fishing pole became an everyday sight around her farm, and ours. The formerly abundant catfish became much harder to catch, but Gladys enjoyed mobility and freedom from pain she had not known in years.

Although I’ve never heard of anyone else who cured arthritis with fried catfish, my neighbor’s general approach to dealing with her disease was scarcely unique. People who have rheumatoid arthritis and their doctors in their more honest moments will often tell you that some foods aggravate arthritis and other foods make it better.

The problem in treating rheumatoid arthritis with whole foods has been that one person’s “super-food” has no effect at all for someone else, or may even make arthritis worse. Since foods can’t be patented, there have been no millions in research money to research the patterns of foods that may help everyone who has rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, the research establishment has been debunking food as a treatment for arthritis for over eighty years.

In the early 1900s, many doctors published reports on the use of food to treat rheumatic diseases. Food cures, of course, competed with sales of the new wonder drug, aspirin. In 1932, a Dr. Weatherbee analyzed 350 cases of arthritis and concluded that “Dietary treatments of all types had been tried in many cases [but]…little definite improvement dietary management alone was reported.” As steroid drugs began to appear on the market, criticism of food cures for arthritis intensified.

A comprehensive review of the medical research of its time-1940-concluded, “The incidence of food allergy among rheumatic patients is not significant.” Medical schools had actually taught doctors how to apply food cures in arthritis, but by 1954, the last medical school textbook to discuss the use of diet in the management of rheumatoid arthritis stated, “We cannot approve the emphasis laid on the factor of food allergy in cases of atrophic arthritis; it is neither common nor do we consider it important….Cases of atrophic arthritis with undoubted and repeated articular exacerbations from foods are few and far between.”

More than fifty years later, however, rheumatoid arthritis sufferers are still using the food cures that medical science once rejected.

Although it is rare for cancer to begin forming inside the bone. It is more likely for cancer to spread to the bone from another part of the body. Since cancer is usually named for the organ where it originated, cancer that spreads to bones it not known as bone cancer.

The different kinds of bone cancer occur in different kinds of bone tissue. The most common kind is osteosarcoma. This kind of cancer begins to form in the ends of bones. As the body grows, the ends of the bones are the places where bone tissue starts to form. People aged 10 to 25 are more likely to contract osteosarcoma. Men are more likely than women.

When cells inside the bone become abnormal, it is called bone cancer. 5 Ways to Boost Your Own Immune System to Avoid That Nasty Winter Flu

05 Apr

With clouds of the H1N1 flu hovering over our heads this season, now is the time more than ever to pay special attention to building your own immune system. By minding your immune system as best you can, you will increase your chances of staying clear of not just the H1N1, but any other nasty flu bugs or colds that may otherwise grab hold of you and ruin your holiday season.

As a cancer survivor, I consider my immune system to be my personal gold. I cherish it carefully and maintain it as best I can to keep ugly winter flu bugs and colds far away. Here are my 5 top tips for keeping my immune system strong. I encourage you to follow these as best you can so you too can enjoy your holiday season to the fullest.

Tip #1: Minimize your consumption of sugar.

Sugar is deadly to your immune system. It also doesn’t help if you’re worried about your weight. Sugar lowers your immune response making you instantly more susceptible to any germs and bacteria coming your way. So, next time you’re reaching for that leftover chocolate from Halloween, I encourage you to think twice. When you’re in the grocery store and tempted to buy your favourite sugary items, I ask you to re-consider. If you buy it and have it lying around on your counters, you will be more likely to eat it. Remember, out of sight, out of mind.

Tip #2: Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine.

Exercise is a great way to build your immune system. It increases circulation and blood flow and helps to lift your mood and minimize the effects of stress. The less stress you have and the more optimally your body is able to function with the help of regular exercise, the stronger your immune system will be. This doesn’t mean you have to join the gym. If you’re not used to exercising, simply going for brisk walks or putting on some dance music and boogying for a while letting all your inhibitions go, is enough. It is not so much what you do, but how consistently you do it and at what intensity. Remember, more is better than less, but some is always better than none. Start fitting in whatever exercise you can whenever you can.

Tip #3: Get plenty of good quality sleep.

Sleep is also a tremendous ally when it comes to keeping your immune system strong. When you don’t get enough good quality sleep, you are more tired during the day and coping with the stresses and problems of daily life becomes more difficult. Without enough proper sleep, it is also more difficult to stay motivated to eat healthy and fit in your exercise.

Tip #4: Minimize ongoing stress.

Stress is a factor of life that is difficult to eliminate. However, to keep a healthy immune system, it is something that must be controlled. Short-term stress is inevitable when we have those instant reactions to people or events that are unexpected, such as that traffic jam when you’re trying to get to an important appointment on time. It creates worry and anxiety or other emotions difficult to control. However, for the sake of your health on every level, you need to let go of the negative emotions as quickly as you can and find a way to re-frame your situation so that you can approach it with a more positive and realistic outlook. If you stay in the “muck” of negative stress for too long, you are putting your immune system at risk as well as your mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Tip #5: Keep your hands clean.

So much of the flus and colds floating around out there are transmitted through touch. We pick up so many germs through our hands without even realizing it since they’re all so invisible. Getting into the habit of washing your hands after being in public places is critical especially after shaking hands with others, or using the rest room. I highly believe that we should do away completely with our cultural hand-shaking etiquette. Keeping some hand sanitizer in your purse is a great way to keep your hands clean when it is not possible to get to a rest room. This is especially handy when traveling.

It may seem like there’s lots to think about when trying to be mindful or your immune system. Although, it does take some extra effort on your part, your health and well-being are certainly worth it. Follow these tips as listed above and with each healthy choice you make you will be one step closer to a stronger immune system for a healthier and happier holiday season.
